STANDARD TODAY POLL SHOWS NAME RECALL DRIVING VOTERS

Standard Today poll shows name recall driving voters

SENATOR Ramon Revilla Jr. is leading the senatorial race, replacing Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada as the most popular candidate for the position, the latest Manila Standard Today survey shows.

Conducted from Jan. 20 to 27, the poll asked 2,500 registered voters nationwide to cast their vote for president, vice president and 12 senators on a form designed to look like the official ballot, said Pedro Laylo Jr., resident pollster at Manila Standard Today. Respondents were told to drop their completed ballots into a box.

The survey, designed to simulate the voting experience in May, has a margin of error of 2 percent.

“As in the previous poll in December, current and former senators dominate the top 12 with a few newcomers who have familiar last names,” Laylo said.

Revilla, who obtained 41 percent of the vote, was followed by former senators Vicente Sotto III (39 percent) and Ralph Recto (38 percent); Estrada (36 percent); Sergio Osmeña III (33 percent); Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (32 percent); Alexander Lacson (30 percent); Senator Pia Cayetano (30 percent); Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile (29 percent); former senator Franklin Drilon (29 percent); Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago (27 percent); Gwendolyn Pimentel (25 percent); and Sonia Roco (25 percent).

Laylo says the results show that the average Filipino voter tends to choose candidates based on name recall.

For example, Alexander Lacson and Gwendolyn Pimentel, who moved up in the survey, have the same last names as two sitting senators.

Revilla also benefitted from the name recall in his recent movie Ang Panday.

Laylo says the ballot-box method adopted in January allowed respondents more time to think through their responses. It also allowed an element of secrecy, since the interviewer could not see the choices made.

In the previous face-to-face method, respondents expressed their choices verbally to an interviewer who recorded them.
